Alumni Spotlight: Keith Salandy Grad 2008
What have you been up to since graduating from IAR?
I am a songwriter and performer under the alter ego K Banger. What some may not know is that I was given that name from playing drums and percussion instruments, primarily in R&B, Reggae, and Calypso bands. I played up and down the east coast while recording my albums and studying music. You can check me out at myspace.com/KBangerMusic, and cdbaby.com/KBanger. I have plenty of videos posted on youtube.com/StereoMotionTV and on BET.com/onblast.
Tell us a about what you do in your current position?
I do a few things. I am an audio post engineer, sound designer and voice-over talent for BET (Black Entertainment Television) Creative Services in New York. I have also done work for others like Sony, Sci Fi Channel, Stereo Motion Entertainment, and New Line Cinema. I also license and sell music to television networks through my own company The Dirt Department, Inc.
How has attending IAR helped you in your current and past jobs?
I came to IAR because it was the best way for me to get a solid foundation in audio engineering and production. I was told that you can learn these techniques by simply ‘learning a few things’ in the studio. I’ve been in studios for many years now, and that is not true. I’m a learn-by-the-book kind of guy and I like to be surrounded by professionals. In this current era of home studios and simple software setups that anyone can install and operate, you have to have an edge, especially in the professional arena. IAR has given me more than just an education and experience. I now have more confidence in what I do, more exposure as an artist, credits toward a degree, and most importantly, relationships with great industry and audio professionals that will last a lifetime.
What advice would you give to current IAR students?
My personal saying is, “Don’t say it – play it.” Less talk and much more practical action. Master the art of starting small. And finally, it’s not who you know, it’s about what you’re doing! Do well and people want to get to know you. If you know people and you’re not doing anything, that just doesn’t work.

Alumni Spotlight: Chris Walsh Grad 1975
What have you been up to since graduating from IAR?
I was producing for 20th Century Records at the time I enrolled. Since then I have been a staff engineer for Elektra/Asylum Records, worked for Warner Bros Publishing, ran a private studio for Rick Rosas, the bass player for Joe Walsh & Neil Young, was the Chief Engineer at Yo-Dad Productions/Boulevard Sound, managed three Guitar Center stores, was the Vice President at Martinsound, ran Tannoy North America’s studio products division and have imported Tube Tech and Audient gear, working for my own company CW Sales & Marketing. Over the years I have recorded with many artists such as Greg Allman, Little Richard, Kenny Loggins, Joe Walsh and Frank Zappa.
Tell us a about what you do in your current position.
CW Sales & Marketing is a family business, based in southern California. Our objectives are fairly simple: import and promote great sounding gear and support high quality recording however that opportunity comes. I import and distribute fine studio electronics and do marketing consultation. We have a particular focus on clinics in the school environment, aimed at passing down recording techniques and lore from the masters who helped create our industry. I still do recording, but mostly live these days. I also play guitar and sing in a Christian blues band.
How has attending IAR helped you in your current and past jobs?
Immensely, in as many ways as education can. At the most basic level, it increases my credibility because I can engage in dialogue in areas beyond those in which I am expected to perform.
What advice would you give to current IAR students?
Push your limits and recognize that opportunities come from unexpected places. Pay attention to the people you meet, especially the grey-hairs in this business. They know stuff you need to know. Especially in this business, education never stops. Keep learning and be generous in passing on what you know.

Alumni Spotlight: Neil Aviles Grad 2007
What have you been up to since graduating from IAR?
I originally came to IAR because I was trying to get my own music career moving. Now I am still working on my own music as well as working at the NYC club, Highline Ballroom. I started as an intern at the Highline Ballroom through IAR’s Career Services Department. I am also an intern at the Annex, a NYC rock club and bar and lounge. The person who gave me that opportunity is now my mentor, Peter Auslan. He is the Production Manager at the Annex and an Engineer at the Highline Ballroom. I am also looking for other venues to work at.
Tell us a about what you do in your current position?
My current position at the Highline Ballroom is a Stage Technician. The Highline Ballroom got me certified on their Yamaha live soundboards to assist and run sound for major artists including Steve Wonder, Santana, Coheed and Cambria, and Queen Latifah, as well as regional and local bands. At both the Highline Ballroom and Annex, I assist in the show production including load-in and load-out and basically anything that happens on stage whether a microphone falls off a snare drum or a band member knocks down a wedge. I take care of it.
How has attending IAR helped you in your current and past jobs?
IAR has helped me because if it were not for the internship at the Highline Ballroom, it might have been harder to find my own work. Through this job, I have made many friends and connections that have helped me find additional work. You might need those connections in the future if anything happens.
What advice would you give to current IAR students?
Work your behinds off!!!!! You will learn a lot at IAR but that is only part of the battle. At most internships, the employers is not interested only in what you learned. But alsohow much you want it and how much you are willing to learn, even if you were already taught some of what they are teaching you. It doesn’t hurt to hear it again and my mentor is always telling me to ‘work smart’ which helps greatly in the fast paced environment of live sound. Make sure you want this because if you are not tested in IAR, you will be tested in the real world. So think long and hard, take the classes, talk to the teachers and be confident about the decisions you make.
