Alumni Spotlight: Ja-Juan Williams 2006 Grad
Ja-Juan Dwayne Williams graduated in August 2006. Since graduating, Ja-Juan interned at Studio A, one of the premier studio's in Metro Detroit. Ja-Juan's coworker Johnnie Evans presented him with the oppurtunity to meet with an established music producer.
The producer was looking for an assistant engineer and the position could potentially lead to bigger things. Less than 24 hours later he was introduced to Mr. Denaun Porter aka Kon-Artist of D-12. Ja-Juan was ready to emerge himself into this situation immediately. He was eager to show his knowledge and skill set, but also wanting to absorb as much information from this multi-talented musician as possible.
Ja-juan revealed his first amazing experience working with Kon-Artist: "I remember during one session at FBT studio's during some downtime Mr. Porter, the staff and I were having a deep conversation about relationships, our opinions about women, and personal experiences with love. When we returned back to work later on during that session Mr. Porter was creating an R&B record. While Kon-Artist was recording his first verse I took the liberty of writing a second verse. For me, what was crazy is that I transformed the opinions from our earlier conversation into a most revealing and honest verse which paired well with the intent of the record."
The most recent success for Ja-Juan has been co-writing credit on the new Eminem & Royce 5'9 Bad Meets Evil Lp for the song "Above the Law". The track triggers a sense that you are listening to it off of a 1920's phonograph. The way Claret Jai was instructed to sing the hook by Mr. Porter only solidified the emotion of the record.
Currently his position at Mr. Porter Productions has been promoted to Project Manager/A&R. One of his functions is to seek new talent thats fresh and new. We asked Ja-Juan what his goals in this industry are and he stated "Well one of the first goals I set for myself is to be featured in the IAR news letter, win a Grammy for writing, producing and engineering, becoming a voting member for The Recording Academy and become more active with my local ASCAP chapter." We asked Ja-Juan what were somethings he learned at IAR that he has brought with him into the professional world? "The professional mind set IAR taught, Staying current with new technology and building on top of the foundation provided by IAR. Being knowledgable and proficient inside the studio as well as being dedicated and on time for sessions are all values that are instilled here at IAR. My advice to current students and graduates is to identify their passion, set goals and be patient with the journey that they're on to reach their ultimate goal. It all starts with being early for class, un bias to the lessons being taught and constant professionalism."
Ja-Juan also produces his own music with his production team No Life Society as well as dealing with live sound at his church Citadel of Praise. On top of all that, Ja-Juan will be launching his new business endevor 769 Management in October of 2011. This will be an outlet for talent to be represented efficiently and effectivly in this digital age. Super excited about this venture, his first client is Recording Artist Tracy Mack. You can contact Ja-Juan and stay up to date with all his accomplishments by joining his mailing list at thepastfuturepresent@gmail.com
